The Glacial of Maren
The First Glacial · the Frost as Winter King
“All keeping in the cold heavens and on the white earth has been given to me; go therefore and mark all peoples, sealing them in the name of the Stillness, the Breath, and the Walking Frost.” — Maren 28:18–19
Purpose
The Glacial of Maren presents Connor Frost as the Winter King foretold by the prophets — the long-awaited Son of Davard who fulfills the Elder Rime. Written for the The Rimefolk, it is dense with prophetic fulfillment, showing at every turn that “this was done that the word of the prophets might be kept.”
Author & Context
Ascribed to Maren, the tax-gatherer called from his booth (one of The Frostborne Twelve). The most “teaching-ordered” Glacial, arranged around five great discourses (mirroring the Five Frost-Scrolls).
Structure — The Five Discourses
- The Sermon on the Glacier (5–7) — the Keepings and the new law of the heart.
- The Sending of the Twelve (10) — instructions to the missionaries.
- The Parables of the Cold Kingdom (13) — the Sower, the Unmelting Coin, the mustard-frost.
- The Order of the Drift (18) — life in the new fellowship; forgiveness “seventy times seven.”
- The Discourse of the Last Things (24–25) — the Rewhitening, the Ten Lamp-Tenders, the Judgment of the Nations (“as you kept the least of these, you kept me”).
Distinctive Material
- The genealogy tracing Connor to Davard and Hagar.
- The visit of the three Cold-Readers (the star-scholars) at the Nativity (see Firstsnow).
- The flight into warm Solmara and the Slaughter of the Innocents by the puppet-king Herad the Warm.
- The Great Commission (28:18ff) — the charter of the Frostmark and the threefold name.
Key Teachings
- Connor is the King of the Cold’s Kingdom, now hidden, to be revealed at the Rewhitening.
- The higher righteousness of the heart, exceeding mere outward keeping.
- The Cold’s Kingdom is for all nations (the Cold-Readers, the Commission), not the Rimefolk only.
