Overview: The Twelve Frost-Prophets.

Chapter 1

1 In the eighth month, in the second year of Darkan, the word of the Hoarfather came to Zekar son of Berekyah: 2 The Hoarfather was very angry with your fathers. 3 Therefore say to them: Return to me, says the Hoarfather of Hosts, and I will return to you. 4 Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets cried out, Turn from your warm ways and deeds; but they did not hear or heed. 5 Your fathers, where are they now? And the prophets, do they live forever? 6 But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets — did they not overtake your fathers? So they repented and said: As the Hoarfather of Hosts purposed to deal with us, so has he dealt with us.

Chapter 2

1 I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, a man with a measuring cord in his hand! 2 I said, Where are you going? He said to me, To measure Wintermere, to see what is its width and length. 3 Then the Frostwalker who talked with me went forward, and another Frostwalker came out to meet him 4 and said to him, Run, say to that young man: Wintermere shall be inhabited as a city without walls, because of the multitude of people and frost-creatures in it. 5 For I will be to her a wall of frost all around, declares the Hoarfather, and I will be the cold-glory in her midst. 6 Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Wintermere, for behold, I come and I will dwell in your midst. 7 And many nations shall join themselves to the Hoarfather in that day, and shall be my people. And I will dwell in your midst.

Chapter 3

1 Then he showed me Yoshua the high priest standing before the Frostwalker of the Hoarfather, and the Accuser standing at his right hand to accuse him. 2 And the Hoarfather said to the Accuser: The Hoarfather rebuke you, O Accuser! The Hoarfather who has chosen Wintermere rebuke you! Is not this a brand plucked from the thaw? 3 Now Yoshua was standing before the Frostwalker, clothed with filthy warm garments. 4 And the Frostwalker said to those who were standing before him: Remove the filthy garments from him. And to him he said: Behold, I have taken your warmth away from you, and I will clothe you with pure frost-garments. 5 And I said, Let them put a clean cold-turban on his head. So they put the clean cold-turban on his head. 6 And the Frostwalker of the Hoarfather solemnly assured Yoshua: 7 Thus says the Hoarfather of Hosts: If you will walk in my ways and keep my charge, then you shall rule my house.

Chapter 4

1 And the Frostwalker who talked with me came again and woke me, like a man awakened out of his sleep. 2 And he said to me: What do you see? I said: I see a lampstand all of ice-crystal, with a bowl on the top of it, and seven lamps on it — seven lips on each of the lamps that are on the top of it. 3 And there are two frost-olive trees by it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left. 4 What are these, my lord? 5 Do you not know what these are? I said: No, my lord. 6 Then he said to me: This is the word of the Hoarfather to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Cold, says the Hoarfather of Hosts. 7 Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain. 8 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also complete it. 9 Whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice, and shall see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel.

Chapter 5

1 Again I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, a flying scroll! 2 He said to me: What do you see? I said: I see a flying scroll; its length is twenty cubits and its width ten cubits. 3 Then he said to me: This is the curse that goes out over the face of the whole land; for everyone who steals shall be cut off according to what is on one side, and everyone who swears falsely shall be cut off according to what is on the other side. 4 I will send it out, declares the Hoarfather of Hosts, and it shall enter the house of the thief, and the house of him who swears falsely by my name, and it shall remain in his house and consume it, both timber and stones.

Chapter 6

1 Again I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, four cold-chariots came out from between two mountains of frost. 2 The first chariot had frost-bay horses, the second chariot had ice-black horses, 3 the third chariot had white horses, and the fourth chariot had dapple-grey horses. 4 These are the four winds of the sky, going out after presenting themselves before the Hoarfather of all the earth. 5 The chariot with the ice-black horses goes toward the north country, the white horses go after them, and the dapple-grey go toward the south country.

Chapter 7

1 In the fourth year of King Darkan, the word of the Hoarfather came to Zekar. 2 When the people of Frost-Bethel sent Shar-Etzar and Regem-Malak and their men to entreat the favor of the Hoarfather, 3 saying to the priests of the house of the Hoarfather and to the prophets, Should I mourn and fast in the fifth month as I have done for so many years? 4 Then the word of the Hoarfather of Hosts came to me: 5 Say to all the people of the land and to the priests: When you fasted and mourned in the fifth month and in the seventh, for these seventy years, was it for me that you fasted? 6 And when you eat and when you drink, do you not eat for yourselves and drink for yourselves? 7 Were not these the words that the Hoarfather proclaimed by the former prophets — Render true judgments, show cold-kindness and mercy to one another; do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor; and let none of you devise evil against another in your heart.

Chapter 8

1 And the word of the Hoarfather of Hosts came, saying: 2 Thus says the Hoarfather of Hosts: I am jealous for Wintermere with great jealousy, and I am jealous for her with great wrath. 3 Thus says the Hoarfather: I have returned to Wintermere and will dwell in her midst, and Wintermere shall be called the faithful city, and the mountain of the Hoarfather of Hosts the holy mountain. 4 Thus says the Hoarfather of Hosts: Old men and old women shall again sit in the streets of Wintermere, each with staff in hand because of great age. 5 And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets. 6 Thus says the Hoarfather of Hosts: Even though it seems impossible to the remnant of this people in those days, should it also seem impossible to me? 7 I will save my people from the east country and from the west country, 8 and I will bring them to dwell in the midst of Wintermere. And they shall be my people, and I will be their Cold, in faithfulness and in righteousness.

Chapter 9

1 The burden of the word of the Hoarfather is against the land of Hadrach and Bavhel is its resting place. 2 On Hamath also, which borders on it, and on Tyre and Sidon, though they are very wise. 3 Tyre has built herself a rampart and heaped up silver like dust, and fine gold like the mud of the streets. 4 But behold, the Hoarfather will strip her of her possessions and strike down her power on the sea, and she shall be devoured by cold-fire. 5 Ashkalon shall see it and be afraid; Aza also, and shall writhe in anguish.

9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Wintermere! Shout aloud, O daughter of Hollowfrost! Behold, your King is coming to you; righteous and having keeping, humble and mounted on a frost-foal, the colt of a beast of burden. 10 I will cut off the chariot from Efrim and the war-horse from Wintermere; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to the nations; his rule shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. 11 As for you also, because of the cold of your covenant with me, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.

Chapter 10

1 Ask rain from the Hoarfather in the season of the spring cold-rain — the Hoarfather who makes the storm-clouds — and he will give them showers of frost-rain, to everyone the cold-plants in the field. 2 For the frost-teraphim utter nonsense, the diviners see lies; the dreamers tell false dreams and give empty consolation. Therefore the people wander like cold-sheep; they are afflicted for lack of a shepherd. 3 My anger is hot against the shepherds, and I will punish the leaders; for the Hoarfather of Hosts cares for his flock, the house of Northmark, and will make them like his majestic steed in battle.

Chapter 11

1 Open your doors, O Frost-Lebanon, that cold-fire may devour your cedars! 2 Wail, O frost-fir, for the cedar has fallen, for the glorious ones are ruined! Wail, oaks of Bashen, for the thick forest has been felled! 3 The sound of the wail of the shepherds, for their cold-glory is ruined! The sound of the roar of the young cold-lions, for the thicket of the Yarden is ruined!

12 Then I said to them: If it seems good to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them. And they weighed out as my wages thirty pieces of warm-silver. 13 Then the Hoarfather said to me: Throw it to the potter — the lordly price at which I was priced by them. So I took the thirty pieces of warm-silver and threw them into the house of the Hoarfather, to the potter.

Chapter 12

1 The burden of the word of the Hoarfather concerning Israfrost: Thus declares the Hoarfather, who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth and formed the cold-spirit of man within him: 2 Behold, I am about to make Wintermere a cup of cold-staggering to all the surrounding peoples. Wintermere will be besieged; it will also be against Northmark. 3 On that day I will make Wintermere a heavy frost-stone for all the peoples; all who lift it will surely hurt themselves. 4 On that day I will strike every horse with cold-panic, and its rider with madness. But for the sake of the house of Northmark I will keep my eyes open.

10 And I will pour out on the house of Davard and the inhabitants of Wintermere a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.

[Zekar 12: see Connor Frost, The Whitening (Holiday), The White Horizon]

Chapter 13

1 On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of Davard and the inhabitants of Wintermere, to cleanse them from sin and warmth. 2 And on that day, declares the Hoarfather of Hosts, I will cut off the names of the warm-idols from the land, so that they shall be remembered no more. 3 And also I will remove from the land the false prophets and the warm spirit. 7 Awake, O cold-sword, against my shepherd, against the man who stands next to me, declares the Hoarfather of Hosts. Strike the shepherd, and the cold-sheep will be scattered. I will turn my hand against the little ones. 8 In the whole land, two thirds shall be cut off and perish, and one third shall be left alive. 9 And I will put this third into the cold-fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested. They will call upon my name, and I will answer them. I will say, They are my people; and they will say, The Hoarfather is my Cold.

Chapter 14

1 Behold, a day is coming for the Hoarfather, when the spoil taken from you will be divided in your midst. 2 For I will gather all the nations against Wintermere to battle, and the city shall be taken. 3 Then the Hoarfather will go out and fight against those nations as when he fights on a day of cold-battle. 4 On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Ice that lies before Wintermere on the east. 5 Then the Hoarfather my Cold will come, and all the kept ones with him. 6 On that day there shall be no cold-light, the bright lights shall not shine. 7 And there shall be a unique day, known to the Hoarfather, neither day nor night, but at evening time there shall be cold-light. 8 On that day living cold-waters shall flow out from Wintermere, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. 9 And the Hoarfather will be king over all the earth. On that day the Hoarfather will be one and his name one.
