The Glacial of Lucan
The Third Glacial · the Frost as the Savor for All Peoples
“For unto you is born this night, in the village of Hollowfrost, a Keeper, who is the Winter King, the Cold made flesh.” — Lucan 2:11
Purpose
The Glacial of Lucan presents Connor Frost as the Savor for all peoples — the gentle, tender Keeper of the poor, the outcast, the warm-born stranger, women, and sinners. The most careful and orderly of the Glacials, it is also the most universal: salvation is for everyone, even those the proud regard as too warm to be kept.
Author & Context
Ascribed to Lucan, the physician and companion of Vael, “having traced all things accurately from the first.” A two-volume work: the Glacial is its first half, the Acts its second. Written for the warm-born convert Theofrost and the wider world.
Distinctive Material (found only here)
- The fullest Nativity account: the Herald Caelar to Wenna, the journey to Hollowfrost, the birth in the icecutters’ shelter, the shepherds and the cold-host of Frostwalkers singing “Glory to the Cold in the highest, and on earth the Stillness of keeping.” (See Firstsnow.)
- The canticles: Wenna’s Magnifrost (“my soul keeps the Cold great”), the Benedrift of Vohan’s father, the Nunc Gelidum of old Saint Simeran in the Frosthall (“now let your servant be stilled in peace, for my eyes have seen your Keeping”).
- The great parables of mercy unique to Lucan: the Prodigal in the South, the Good Stranger-of-the-Warm-South (who alone stops for the man left to freeze), the Lost Lamb, the Lost Coin.
- The penitent betrayer Zacc the tax-gatherer; the thief on the second Sunstone (“today you shall be with me in the White Horizon”); the forgiving cry from the Sunstone, “Father, keep them, for they know not what they melt.”
Key Teachings
- The Cold’s keeping is for all: the poor, women, foreigners, sinners, the warm-born.
- Mercy and reversal: the proud-warm are humbled, the lowly-cold lifted (the Magnifrost).
- The importance of prayer, joy, and the Frostwalkers (Lucan records more of each than the others).
