Saint Brigida of the Drift

Abbess of the Cold Hearth · Foundress of the Sisters of the Veil

Saint Brigida of the Drift is the great abbess-foundress of Frostian women’s religion — patroness of the cold hearth and the poor, and founder of the Sisters of the Veil, the largest women’s order of the faith. Born of the The Rimefolk, she “kept the fire of charity by keeping herself cold,” giving away all warmth and wealth to shelter the freezing poor.

The Cold Hearth

Brigida’s paradox — the warm hearth kept by the cold heart — became a Frostian proverb: that true charity warms others by mortifying the self. Her foundations spread hospitals, almshouses, and schools across the northern realms; the veiled sisters still keep her rule of Keeping. Many miracles of provision are told of her: bread that did not run out, ice that healed fever, a cloak that sheltered a multitude.

Veneration

Patroness of abbesses, nurses, the poor, brewers (of the cold cellars), and of Caldhaven; one of the most beloved saints of the common folk. Her feast opens the season of charity before The Long Fast.
