The Names and Titles of the Cold
How the Faithful Name the Unnameable
The Names and Titles of the Cold gathers the many names by which Frostians address the divine — for the Cold “in itself” (see The Eternal Chill) is beyond all naming, yet has made itself known, and so may be named in awe and delight. The names fall into orders:
- Of the divine being: the Cold, the Eternal Chill, the Stillness, the First Breath.
- Of the Hoarfather (the personal Creator): the Hoarfather, the Keeper, the Maker of the Six Winters, the Ever-Still.
- Of the Winter King: Connor Frost, the Thawless One, the Savor, the Glacial Incarnation, the Coldest Heart, the Winter King.
- Of the Rime-within: the Cold-Breath, the Comforter in the Frost, the Indwelling Rime.
On the Use of the Names
The faith teaches both the way of naming (calling the Cold by its revealed names in praise) and the way of unnaming (the mystics’ silence before the Stillness “of which no warm word is true”). The greatest names are kept for worship; to misuse them is among the gravest breaches of the Law. The chief refrain — “Awe and delight; the Cold is good” — sums all the names in praise.
