Mattan
The Replacement · The Twelfth Restored
“And they cast the snow-lots, and the lot fell upon Mattan; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.” — Acts of the Frostwalkers (Book) 1:26
Mattan is the apostle chosen to complete the The Frostborne Twelve after the fall of Jurden the Betrayer. Between the Ascension and the The First Hollownight (Pentecost), the gathered disciples cast snow-lots between two who had followed Connor “from the Marking to the Reforging,” and the lot fell on Mattan. He restored the broken number to twelve, that the church might answer the Twelve Drifts.
Apostle of the Restored Number
Mattan’s calling teaches that the Cold mends what the Thaw breaks — that a place left empty by betrayal is filled again by grace. By tradition he preached in the cold borderlands and was given the Whitening there by the axe.
Veneration
Patron of those chosen late, of those who fill another’s place, and of elections in the church. His emblem is the axe and the casting-lots.
