Cael and Nura

The First Humans · the Father and Mother of All

Cael (“the clear”) and Nura (“the snow-light”) are the first human beings of Frostian sacred history: shaped of snow and the Hoarfather’s breath on the Sixth Winter, set in Hibernfold in deathless stillness, and the ones through whose The Kindling warmth, time, and death entered the world.

Cael

Cael was the first man, “shaped of the cleanest snow of Hibernfold” and quickened by the cold breath of The Hoarfather (Book of Frost 2:7). He was given to “keep and clarify” the garden and to name the beasts. His name, “the clear,” marks the first human vocation: to be clear and still, bearing the image of the Keeper.

Nura

Nura was the first woman, formed “of the frost gathered over Cael’s stilled heart” — bone of his cold, the companion “fit to keep with him.” Her name, “the snow-light,” recalls the pale beauty of light on snow. It was Nura whom Melt the Dripping One first tempted with the warm light beyond the garden.

The Kindling

At the whisper of the Dripping One, Nura took the The Stolen Ember and, with Cael, kindled the first flame in Hibernfold — the Fall. The garden began to melt; time, hunger, shame, and death entered; and the two were driven out into the The Age of Drifting. Yet the Hoarfather clothed them in furs against the new cold and gave the Protorime, the first promise of Connor Frost (see The Kindling).

After the Fall

Cael and Nura became the parents of all humankind. Their sons were the warm-tempered Korin (who slew his brother in the first Boil) and the cold-keeping Avel (the first martyr-figure), and many others through whom the long generations of Book of Frost descend toward Halvard the Hoary.

Significance

Cael and Nura embody the whole human condition: made good, of snow and the Cold’s breath, bearing the image of the Keeper — yet “running warm,” choosing the The Stolen Ember, and so bequeathing the Inborn Thaw to all their children. They are the “old Cael and Nura” whom the kept “put off” in the The Frostmark, to put on the new self of Connor Frost, the “second Cael” who undoes the first’s warmth.
