The Ring of Reading
The lectionary cycle through the whole canon each year
The Ring of Reading is the Frostian lectionary — the appointed yearly cycle by which the whole Rime is read through in the The Cold Communion and the The Hours of Frost, so that the faithful “walk the whole ring of the Word” with the turning of the festal year. Its readings are keyed to the calendar: the Elder prophecies in the dark before Firstsnow, the Glacials of the Whitening in its season, the Acts after The First Hollownight (Pentecost).
Method and Meaning
The Ring embodies the conviction that scripture is best read whole and in season — each text in the light of the day that frames it, and the day in the light of its texts. It pairs with the Threefold Sense (the way of reading) as the what-and-when to its how. The completed circuit each year is itself a small image of the great Ring from the Six Winters to the Rewhitening.
