On the Keeping of the Dead

The classic treatise on the Slush and prayer for the dead

On the Keeping of the Dead is the classic treatise on the state of the departed — the doctrine of the The Slush (the meltwater margin where the not-yet-perfectly-kept are cooled and cleansed before the White Horizon) and the practice of praying for the dead, that the living may “help cool” those still in the Slush.

Teaching and Dispute

The treatise grounds the rites of dying and burial, the keeping of the incorrupt relics of the saints as signs of the coming Reforging, and the memorial days of the dead. Its doctrine of the Slush and intercession is held by the Orthodox and Hoarfrost communions and rejected by the Reformed, who deny the Slush — making this treatise a key text in the rite-dividing dispute.
