The Rewhitening — The Last Things

“He came once as the first snow, soft and silent, and the world did not heed. He shall come again as the blizzard that ends the long fever and freezes the world perfect forever.”The Revelation of Ice 22:7

The Rewhitening (the Great Reglaciation, the Endless Winter, the Whiteout to come) is the Frostian doctrine of the last things: the promised day when Connor Frost returns as the Winter King, the long Thaw of history is reversed, the dead are Reforged, the world is judged, and the whole Rime is “made white again” — frozen perfect and incorrupt forever.

The Signs of the Coming

The The Revelation of Ice and the prophets foretell the Signs of the Last Thaw preceding the end:

  • The Great Fever — the world grows hottest and most corrupt; the sun draws nearest, the seas of ice run to water, “and men love their warmth more than ever.”
  • The Cooling of Love — the keeping grows cold among the faithful; many “let their neighbor melt.”
  • The Last Embermite — the rise of a final great deceiver, the Embermite King (the Anti-Frost), who promises eternal summer and is worshipped by the warm. See The Embermite King (Prophecy).
  • The Silence of the Drift — a great apostasy and persecution; the The Hours of Frost cease in many lands.
  • The Sign of the Star — the The Sixfold Star appears in the heavens, and the Aurora covers the whole sky.

The Coming of the Winter King

Then Connor returns “out of the White,” not in lowliness but in the glory of the Reforged Cold, leading the armies of the Frostwalkers. His coming is the Final Frost: a killing, cleansing blizzard that ends the Great Fever in an hour.

The General Reglaciation (Resurrection) and the Judgment

  • The Reforging of all the dead (see The Reforging (Resurrection Doctrine)): the kept to glorified frost, the thawed to the Second Melting.
  • The Clear Judgment — every soul “seen to the bottom” in perfect Clarity before the The Cold Altar of heaven; nothing warm hidden, nothing cold unrewarded. The books are “the ice-records, in which every Fever and every Keeping is frozen and legible.”
  • The Sundering — the kept gathered into the The White Horizon; the thawed and Melt the Dripping One and his Fevered cast into The Mire forever (the Second Melting).

The New Everwinter

Finally the Hoarfather “makes the world white again”: the Middle Rime and the White Horizon become one renewed creation — the New Everwinter, the restored and surpassing Hibernfold, where:

“there shall be no more Thaw, nor death, nor decay, nor hurry, nor the old fevers; for the first warm world has melted away, and behold, all things are made cold and new.”The Revelation of Ice 21:4

The Savor (Connor Frost) reigns, the Stillness is all in all, and the snow that began to fall at the First Winter falls forever and never melts.

How Frostians Live in Light of It

The Rewhitening grounds the virtue of Hope (the Returning Frost) and the discipline of Watchfulness. The faithful keep the The Reglaciation Vigil (the Frostian Advent), pray “Come, Winter King” (the Maranatha of Frostianity, in Rimespeech Vell, Reythar), and labor at the The Works of Keeping so as to be “found cold and watching” at his coming.
