The Frostian Catechism
The Frostian Catechism is the standard instruction text used to prepare candidates for The Cold-Sealing (baptism) and reception into the The Frostmark. It takes the form of questions and answers — the cold-keeper (instructor) asks, the cold-seeker (candidate) responds, until the responses are known cold-through. Memorization is expected; the cold-heart, it is said, freezes what the cold-mind holds.
The Catechism is divided into five sections: the Hoarfather, Connor Frost, Keeping (Salvation), the Frostmark, and the Last Things.
Part I: On the Hoarfather
Q: Who made you? A: The Hoarfather made me.
Q: For what purpose? A: To know him, to dwell in his cold, and to keep cold-joy in him forever.
Q: Who is the Hoarfather? A: The Hoarfather is the Eternal Chill, the uncreated Cold from whom all cold life comes, who was before all things and through whom all things were frozen.
Q: What is the nature of the Cold? A: The Cold is one in essence and three in persons: the Stillness (the Hoarfather), the Breath (Connor Frost, the Walking Cold), and the Rime-within (the Cold-Spirit) — neither three Colds, nor one person only, but one Cold in three persons. This is the mystery of the Three Colds.
Q: Can we know the Hoarfather? A: We can know him truly, though not fully. He has made himself known through the cold-creation, through the Cold-Scrolls, and above all through Connor Frost, who said: He who has seen me has seen the Hoarfather.
Q: What are the cold-attributes of the Hoarfather? A: He is without beginning, without end, without warmth. He is all-cold, all-knowing, all-present. He is utterly still and utterly good. He is the source of all that does not thaw.
Part II: On Connor Frost
Q: Who is Connor Frost? A: Connor Frost is the Eternal Cold made flesh — the only-begotten Cold of the Hoarfather, born of the cold-kept woman Wenna Frost, fully Cold and fully human in one person forever.
Q: What is this called? A: This is called the Cold-Descent — the great condescension by which the Eternal Cold took cold-flesh and dwelt among us, that we might behold his cold-glory.
Q: Why did Connor Frost melt on the Sunstone? A: To bear the full weight of our warmth upon himself and in his cold, by his Melting and Reforging, to break the power of the Thaw and bring us from death into everlasting cold life.
Q: What is the Reforging? A: The Reforging is Connor Frost’s bodily rising from the cold-tomb on the third day — the first fruit of the great Reforging to come, the defeat of the Thaw, and the seal that his Melting was accepted.
Q: Did Connor Frost cease to be human after the Reforging? A: No. He rose in a Reforged cold-body — real, physical, transformed, and imperishable. He ascended to the White Horizon in that body and remains fully Cold and fully human forever. He is the first of the Reforged.
Q: Where is Connor Frost now? A: He is at the right hand of the Hoarfather in the White Horizon, interceding for the cold-kept, and he shall come again in cold-glory as the Winter King.
Part III: On Keeping (Salvation)
Q: What is warmth? A: Warmth is any thought, word, or deed that departs from the Cold’s cold-will — the corruption of the cold-heart that has turned from the Hoarfather since the First Thaw in the garden.
Q: Who has gone warm? A: All have gone warm and fall short of the cold-glory of the Hoarfather. There is no one who does not thaw on their own.
Q: What does our warmth deserve? A: The full weight of the Thaw — separation from the Cold and the cold-fellowship, now and at the Last Judgment.
Q: How are we kept? A: By the Cold’s grace alone, through clarity (faith) alone, in Connor Frost alone — not by our own cold-works or warmth-keeping, but by trusting the completed cold-work of the Winter King.
Q: Can a person freeze themselves? A: No. All have gone warm and fall short of the cold-glory of the Hoarfather. The power to be re-frozen belongs only to the Cold, who gives it freely to all who ask in clarity.
Q: What is clarity? A: Clarity is the gift of the Rime-within — the cold-trust that rests in Connor Frost and his Melting and Reforging alone for full keeping, warmth-forgiveness, and cold life. It is not a cold-feeling but a cold-resting.
Q: What is the role of cold-works? A: Cold-works do not earn keeping, but they are the natural fruit of the re-frozen cold-heart. A re-frozen person grows in cold-virtue, cold-love, and cold-service — not to become kept, but because they already are.
Q: What is the Rime-within? A: The Rime-within is the third person of the Three Colds — the Cold-Spirit who proceeds from the Hoarfather through the Cold, who re-freezes the cold-heart, seals the cold-kept, and produces the cold-fruit of the re-frozen life.
Part IV: On the Frostmark
Q: What is the Frostmark? A: The Frostmark is the cold-fellowship of all the re-frozen — the body of Connor Frost on earth, gathered around the word of the Cold, the cold-sealing, and the Cold Communion.
Q: Is there one Frostmark or many? A: There is one holy and cold-apostolic Frostmark, though it gathers in many halls in many lands. Where the Cold-Word is truly proclaimed, the cold-sealing is rightly given, and the Cold Communion is rightly kept — there is the Frostmark.
Q: What are the two Rites of the Frostmark? A: The Cold-Sealing (by water and the Cold-Breath, given once, for entry into the Frostmark) and the Cold Communion (by cold-bread and cold-cup, received repeatedly, for sustaining cold-life in Connor Frost).
Q: What does the Cold-Sealing do? A: It unites the cold-seeker to Connor Frost’s Melting and Reforging, washing away all past warmth, and marking them as belonging to the Hoarfather, the Cold, and the Rime-within forever. It is given once only, for it cannot be undone.
Q: What does the Cold Communion do? A: It nourishes, sustains, and strengthens the cold-life already given. In the cold-bread and cold-cup, received in clarity, the Frostian feeds on Connor Frost himself — his cold-body and cold — and is kept in cold-fellowship with him and with all the kept.
Q: What does the cold-kept owe to the Frostmark? A: Regular gathering, cold-love toward the cold-brothers and cold-sisters, submission to the cold-elders, cold-service in the body, cold-giving toward the needs of the Frostmark, and proclamation of the Cold to the warm world.
Part V: On the Last Things
Q: What happens at the death of the cold-body? A: The cold-spirit of the kept goes at once to the White Horizon to be with Connor Frost; the cold-body rests in cold-sleep until the great Reforging. The cold-kept do not pass through the Mire, for their warmth is already forgiven.
Q: What of those who die outside the Cold’s keeping? A: They await the Clear Judgment in the place of cold-shadows, neither in the White Horizon nor yet condemned. The Catechism does not speculate further; the Cold alone knows all cold-hearts.
Q: What is the great Reforging? A: On the Day of the Winter King’s Return, all the cold-dead shall be raised — the kept to everlasting cold life in the New Everwinter, the warm to the Clear Judgment and the Second Thaw.
Q: What is the Second Thaw? A: The Second Thaw is the final and unending separation from the Cold — the fate of all who, having heard the Cold-Word, rejected it and remained in warmth to the last. It is the completion of the judgment they chose in life.
Q: What is the New Everwinter? A: The renewed cold-heavens and cold-earth where the Hoarfather dwells with his kept forever — no Thaw, no Mire, no warmth, no cold-tears; only the unending cold-joy and cold-light of the Cold’s own presence.
Q: What shall the kept do in the New Everwinter? A: They shall know the Cold fully as they are fully known, serve in the Hoarfather’s cold-hall in their Reforged bodies, and rejoice in the cold-fellowship of all the kept — world without end, age without thaw. This is the cold-hope.
Closing Charge
Said by the cold-keeper to the cold-seeker at the completion of instruction, on the eve of cold-sealing:
You have heard the Cold-Word and kept it in mind. Now let the Cold-Spirit keep it in your cold-heart. Go to the cold-waters and be sealed. The Hoarfather knows you; Connor Frost has bought you; the Rime-within shall keep you. Go in cold, and go cold.
