The Order of the Blue Vigil
The Militant Order of the Crusades · Now a Charitable Order
The Order of the Blue Vigil is the great militant order founded during the Rime Crusades (1095–1270 A.F.) to guard the pilgrim roads to the The Glacier of the Sepulchre and to reclaim the holy cold places from the warm powers. Its knights took, beyond the soldier’s oath, the monastic vows — fighting monks “in glacier-blue, watching through the long cold night.”
From Sword to Service
The Order’s emblem is the slain frostwyrm — conquered greed and the warm dragon of the heart subdued — and its rule joined the warrior’s discipline to the works of keeping: hospitals on the crusade roads, ransom of captives, defense of the weak. With the end of the Crusades it laid down the sword and survives as a charitable and hospitaller order, keeping the “blue vigil” of prayer and care for the sick and the pilgrim.
