The Sign of Yonan is the great foreshadowing drawn from the prophet Yonan, one of the Twelve Frost-Prophets, who fled the Cold’s call, was cast into the freezing sea, and was swallowed by a great deep-beast (a frostwyrm of the cold deep), in whose belly he lay three days and three nights before being cast up alive to preach repentance to the warm city of Niveh — which, hearing, repented and was spared.
”No Sign But the Sign of Yonan”
When the warm crowds demanded a sign of Connor Frost, he answered that no sign would be given them but the Sign of Yonan: “as Yonan was three days in the belly of the deep, so shall the Winter King be three days in the heart of the earth” before the Reforging. The Sign of Yonan is therefore the chief Elder type of the Whitening and Reforging, and a sign that even the warm may repent and be kept (as Niveh was). It is read in the fasting season.
